2025 California Sales and Use Tax Rate Changes

This post is to keep track of 2025 California sales and use tax rate changes for general tangible items. To learn more about how sales and use tax works in California, read California Sales and Use Tax Fact Sheet.

Effective 4/1/2025:

Rates are changed in 124 cities and 6 counties.

Effective 1/1/2025:

Rate changes in: City of Amador (Amador county) and City of Rio Dell (Humboldt county)

Effective 10/1/2024:

Rate changes in: City of Mountain House (San Joaquin county),  Benicia (Solano county), Grass Valley (Nevada) and Truckee (Nevada)

The following city and county start charging sales and use tax:

  1. City of La Cañada  (Los Angeles county)
  2. Calaveras county

Effective 7/1/2024:

Rate changes in:

  1. City of chino (San Bernardino),  Nevada (Nevada county), Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz), Westminster (Orange county)
  2. County of Santa Cruz (Un-Incorporated area)

Effective 1/1/2024:

In the November 2022 election, voters in city of Goleta approved 1% city district sales and use tax. This increased Goleta’s total sales and use tax rate from 7.750 percent to 8.750 percent. The new city district tax becomes effective on 1/1/2024.
